Start with the work
Classify the task before choosing a model:
- Strategy and long-form reasoning: prioritize structure, nuance, and the ability to hold a complex brief.
- Synthesis and execution: prioritize clear transformation of source material into a usable output.
- Research and multimodal review: prioritize source handling, images, documents, or broad discovery.
- Private or offline work: prioritize a supported local model and a smaller context package.
Keep the input consistent
Comparisons are only useful when each provider receives the same goal, source material, constraints, and desired format. A reusable context package makes that possible.
Evaluate the result inside the project
Do not judge only by how polished an answer sounds. Ask whether it:
- follows the brief,
- uses the correct project facts,
- respects constraints,
- creates a result you can actually use,
- leaves a clear next step.
Build provider roles over time
As you work, create simple provider profiles such as “strategy,” “research,” “private drafting,” or “implementation.” The profile is more useful than a permanent claim that one provider is always superior.
